Info needed - HDMI (???) monitor

I need to be able to play back high definition video that I have
recovered.

I have purchased a unit that reads and plays back all sorts of media,
HDMI included, but the problem lies with the monitor.

Ideally I'd like a monitor that could be plugged into the computer and
the "unit" simultaneously, and which wouldn't spontaneously combust were
a signal to be sent from both at the same time.

Firstly, can someone tell me if this is possible (would prefer a
montitor with proper HDMI interface for the HD playback) and can anyone
recommend a monitor - preferably 24" widescreen.

Thanks

Duncan
