You seem to be referring to when the OS partition "borks itself", so
this is just an OS issue rather than a HDD issue

We weren't talking about "HDD issues", we were talking about the
usefulness or otherwise of setting up separate data partitions on an HDD
when installing.

As I was saying: it is useful to keep Windows on a partition that is
separate from user data, because Windows may need to be reinstalled (for
various reasons, not least the fact that Windows itself isn't perfect)
and it is convenient to be able to do this without having to destroy and
restore the data as well.

in your favour(and mine - since I mentioned it first!!), the point
about the drive label would answer my criticisms.

And an argument against me would be the capacity issue. If backing up
(imaging rather) a big partition(OS+ data/prog-installation-exes), it
creates a big image.

With my method, one could copy the data/inst-exes to the backup hdd,
then delete the data from the main one, then make an image and store
it on th backup one, then copy the data/inst-exe back over. But that
is hassle (as you said).
Or you can make the image and delete the data from the image. (not
hassle). It may just take a bit longer to make the image. I am not
sure how long that takes.. I know restoring tends to be quite quick.

I tend not to make images that often, I have taken te route of
reinstalling windows.

But since hearing the label point, I might change that. I heard about
it last week.

I might amend my system.. Still using 2 Hard Drives
but,
HDD1,
c:\ <-- OS
d:\backups\ <-- prog-installations-file, and ISOs, + data

HDD2 (for backup of d:\backups)
e:\backups\
