Its a Gigabyte GA 7N400 Pro2 with an
AMD Athlon XP 3200 2.19GHz processor
Nvidia GeForce 6800GT Graphics card
And a couple of SATA disks
The CPU runs about 67 degrees most of the time with a system temperature of around 38 deg C. It has an Akasa variable speed fan on it (which I always have turned up to full speed)
When I was building the software up on the machine I never had a problem.
Lately the PC has just been randomly shutting itself down during the first say 20 minutes. I could possibly put this down to replacing ZA (with no firewall) for Kapersky Internet Suite as the shutdowns started happening within a day or so of me doing this, whereas previously I had no such problems. I turned compatibility mode off yesterday and this morning it didn't turn itself off, although it's a bit too early to tell if this was the cause
Anyway, back to the CPU - is this is a bit on the warm side? I am a bit wary of removing the old heat sink and replacing with another one as he suggested if it won't make much difference, especially when it comes to applying the thermal paste. The temperature seems fairly consistent in both the BIOS at boot up, and when windows is running (using the Easy Tune -> Health Status) monitoring tool
Update on this
I think the random shutdowns were definitely due to the dodgy case fan. I disconnected this for 3 days until I could get a replacement and didn't suffer any shutdowns (despite a significantly warmer case temperature as a result)
Today I replaced the 2 rear case fans with a couple of these
Sharkoon Silent Eagle LED 2000 8cm System Fan, 2000rpm, 22.7 cfm
Air Flow 22.7 cfm
Sound Emission 17.8 dBA
I've inspected the CPU cooler fins and they do seem clear of dust although I've not dug too deep into the fins yet. The new fans have reduced the system temp to about 30 degrees, and the CPU temp is about 64 degrees now (probably related to the lower system temp)
Going to what I said elsewhere in the thread there is actually a holder for a fan at the front of the case to draw air in, and also one at the side of the case. Is there is any value in adding any more fans to keep the case cool? The 2 rear fans sucking out air are in line with the CPU fan (the top one in line with the top half of the CPU fan + more besides, and the other covers the bottom half plus more). The one at the side would be at a level below the 2 rear ones. If I were to install one on the side, I take it this should draw air in so it forms a flow round the components that get the warmest?
Yes add a fan to the front of the case
this way you will have a through flow of air
the front should be set to draw cold air into the case it will then be drawn by the rear fans past the cpu hsf and out the back
this should also help reduce the cpu temp by a few degree's
if possible find a fan that has 44 cfm air flow to match the flow of air out the rear of the case this way you should have positve flow of air
depending where the side fan opening is you could place one to draw air in and duct it directly on to the cpu fan this way you would be drawing cold air direct from outside the case onto the cpu this should help drop the temp's by a good bit
not all case's will be able to support a duct directly onto the cpu hsf but it's worth looking at if you have room in your case.
however at the very least add a front draw fan and draw as much cold air into the system as possible, it will help drop the temps by a few degree's
