Hello all, happy new year, happy hangover etc.
I'm going to clean reinstall today. Any advantage to having a smaller C:
for windows and making a separate D: partition for applications?

I just use a separate directory instead of a separate partition.
I have not argued this point with anybody before, so may change my
mind. But I am not so keen on one HDD partitioned for apps and data.
It gives the option of deleting one partition, and your data being
fine. But that is scary.. What if you delete the wrong one, then you
lose your data.
If data is on a separate hard drive then at least you can unplug the
drive with your data, before you go removing an OS partition.
(just as it is standard practice to remove any drive you are not
formatting, when formatting a drive. Because accidents do happen)
So, even if 2 separate partitions on one hard drive, it would probably
be advisable to backup the data first. And if you are doing that, then
you may as well just store data in a separate directory.
I did have a system once of
c:\backups\p
c:\backups\d
p , had progarm installation files
d, had data
And I had another Hard Drive, which I would copy c:\backups to. D.
(making use of the archive attribute with attrib and xcopy would have
been a slight improvement to the copying process. Better than
synchronizing the directories e.g. with fsync, or what I was doing,
which was deleting d:\backups and copying over c:\backups to d)
Recently I have been doing online backups, like with Mozy. It only
does 2GB though, I just use it for my txt and doc files. It requies no
physical work of connecting a hard drive up, and is as effortless as
clicking a button to check email. I have more than txt and doc files,
and it is far from an ideal situation.
Maybe if I could find a friend I could do what mozy does but with >
2GB ;-)
Actually, I could do it myself - in theory. Just, over the network to
another computer in the house. Not an off-site backup, but neither are
most methods. One needs a friend for that!
