Yeah. That's an extremely common failure mode for PSUs. CPUs have
quite strict requirements for voltage input, while fans do not.
And if PSUs take out any component, it's generally the motherboard
rather than the CPU. My sample size of non-Bestecs damaging hardware
is pretty small though.
I've had three Antecs rhrough here (all out of Sonatas) which died and
took out the CPU.
We're all guessing what the situation is here. It just seems a better idea
to try and switch the PSU as the first port of call, rather than assume
other components are dead first. In an ideal world there would be a spare
PSU or machine kicking around to do a bit of swapping around to find what's
broken.
