Possibly OT: Inspiron PSU connector..

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 which gets used and abused. A common problem
I've had with well used laptops is that the cable fails due to repeated
flexing where it joins the plug that goes into the laptop. Today another
failure.
I investigated the failure area and was rather surprised to see that the
failure appears to be due to severance of the outer braid sheath rather than
the central cable. All of the fine wires seem to be broken in a perfect
circle. I can probably do a temporary repair and rejoin what's left of the
outer sheath as it emerges from the plug with the sheath on the cable.
I'm really surprised to see the sheath fail rather than the central cable.
Is this usual?
I'm also a bit fed up with normally having to purchase a whole PSU to fix a
simple cable fault because the plug is non-standard.
Does anyone know of a source of suitable plugs for cable reairs? The PSU is
a PA-9.
Thanks,
Paul
