When installing for the first time is it possible to have partitions on
one
drive set up as

C:\ - Windows System
D:\ - Optical Drive
E:\ - Applications, Microsoft Office, other programs, etc
F:\ - Documents

And then when the time comes for a re-install, I only need to re-install
the
OS and not all of the programs - or is it not that simple?

Additionally I'd like to know if it is possible to move the current boot
partition to another drive and dual boot it with the newly installed OS
until things are set up the way I like and then delete it without a trace,
so the system no longer dual boots?

If you are running XP a quick and dirty way to set up is to only format the
c: partition at install that way the CD/DVD drive will be allocated d:
formatting the other partitions later will allocate them to later drive
letters i.e. e: f: and so on however it does'nt really help as many
programs install files to the windows system directories including ini, dll
and runtime libararies, etc so when you delete/ format the windows partition
you lose those files and the programs will not run.Still it is a good way to
preserve data files and also to keep the swap file in its own partition to
prevent fragmentation . I do have my own box set in dual boot mode with 2 XP
installs I'm lucky in that the bios can control boot via a pop up menu so if
push comes to shove I can run either and also run Ubuntu off a live cd as an
alternative.
