I can start the machine in VGA mode, which is 640 x 480 and 8 bit colour.
The computer notifies me that the settings are low for the capabilities of
the card, and offers a chance to correct them. I select 1024 x 768 and 32
bit colour - which is what I had the first time. However, on selecting that
(or in fact any other mode above 640 x 480 and 8 bit colour) the monitor
instantly displays "No Signal", then goes into Power Save mode. It doesn't
revert - usually when I change the display there is a countdown to click
yes/no to save the settings, otherwise it reverts back to the old one - in
case you select an undisplayable mode and get stuck with it.

Any ideas how to fix this? Is it a knackered card or a knackered monitor?

Don't know if this'll help, but I put a 19" monitor on a Dell that's a few
years old and there was no signal shown then a black screen.
Fiddled around with the buttons (the monitor had been on another box on
DVI); analogue didn't do it, but Native did (and the picture's not bad for
what's running it).
