Hi -

Currently got an Athlon 64 single-core 3700+ processor in an Asus
A8NSLI - SE mainboard with 2gig matched Crucial 3200 RAM with a SATA
RAID 0 array, giving a score of 4.1 on Vista. The weak link is the
processor. All the rest of the kit gives much higher performance.

Looking to upgrade and tempted by a bundle from overclockers.co.uk
which would cost £270+carriage. Of course I can offset this by
selling the old bits on Ebay, which I feel would probably nett around
£100-£120, so would be spending around £150

The upgrade bundle consists of :

Intel Core 2 DUO LGA775 E6600 2.40GHz Retail / Abit IP35 / 2GB GeIL
PC2-6400C4 DDR2 Dual Channel Kit - Bundle.

Obviously, this would appear to be a very major leap in performance
for me and as such is very tempting, even though I would have to wait
a while.
On the other hand I could spend very little and buy an Athlon 64 x 2
core duo 4200 for about £40.

The burning question - would the upgrade to a 4200 64 x 2 represent a
significant performance hike in 'normal' use from the 3700+ single
core I am used to; or would this be a waste of time and money, would
I be better off saving up for the 'major upgrade'.

Any thoughts/advice very welcome and greatly appreciated

I have a single-cored Athlon64 PC (Shuttle mobo) and an Athlon64x2PC (Asus
mobo). The Athlon 64 x 2 PC performs much better/faster, although I'm not
unhappy with either. I run a Brisbane-cored Athlon 64x2 (4000+ 2.1GHz) My
worry is that if you upgrade from Athlon 64 single-core to Athlon 64 x 2
*Brisbane* core you might have problems with the BIOS not recognising the
architecture of the new CPU. You may or may not be able to get a BIOS
upgrade. I suggest that if you stick with AMD you upgrade to a
*Windsor* -cored Athlon64x2. (e.g. an Athlon 64 x 2 3800+ )

Thanks to all for your help. Certainly some interesting and key points for
me to mull over
