Trying to do this over the phone for someone who's not very technical at
all - they seem to have a sound device in the computer that's not
installed - no drivers. How do I find out what it is, so I can e-mail the
right drivers for it? Can talk then through installing it over the phone.
You might get them to boot a Linux LiveCD like Ubuntu, it will probably
identify it. From a terminal type "aplay -l", it will list the sound
card(s).
There is also the systemrescue Linux livecd which has a lot of diagnostic
tools that run from a boot up menu. This and many other rescue
liveCDs are available - all free with source code.
