ati and nvidia allow advanced screen selection in their drivers....

You're absolutely right! Your reply made me persevere with the advanced
settings:
Obviously this is not possible with all display drivers, but when it's
plugged into a PC with an ATi Radeon card you go into Display Properties,
"Displays" tab, click "Monitor" and on the properties box uncheck "Use DDC
information". You can then specify the maximum resolution yourself.
Additionally you have to untick "hide modes that this monitor cannot
display" on the Monitor display properties tab where the refresh rate
selection is.
The DDC information confirms that this monitor is mis-reporting it's maximum
resolution - it says 1024x768. When I entered 1280x768, it quite happily
accepted this and for the first time ever (apart from when viewing TV etc) I
am seeing the panel in its native resolution.
Obviously this isn't going to be quite so simple on Linux, or machines with
other graphics chipsets but at least I've proved the bluddy thing works!
Thanks :)
