I had a job once that did pretty much the same.Once opened up the fault was
staring me in the face: Someone had dropped the unit, (Marks/damage to case
corner indicating this.) which had caused the tiny heatsink-retention-clip
lug on the mobo to snap, releasing the clip on the cooler of the AMD Sempron
CPU, which had fallen off causing the CPU to overheat and thermally shut
down when booted.
But that sort of fault will =never= get past startup, whereas the OP has one which only fails intermittently ..
