Re: New build - halt on ACPI Controller

Hi John,

I did do the hard reset after the failure with the knife! I disconnected the
mains, removed the cmos battery and set a jumper across the reset pins!
Next time I started (after removing the jumper and replacing the battery the
clock had reset and the bios recognised that the cmos had been cleared and
allowed me to reset and then load Optimised or Failsave settings.

However, the problem is still there - no change whatever.

I've uploaded a picture of the halt screen to:

Hopefully you can see something there which my descriptions have failed to
communicate!

Many thanks!

Pete

The message <fg81ib$5a9$1$8302bc10@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
from "Peter Boulton" <peter@data*no-spam*perceptions.co.uk> contains
these words:

I think I tried to clear the CMOS RAM by (carefully) shorting it with a
kitchen knife! But if the time was not reset and is still right does
this
mean I did't actually successfully clear the cmos?

The problem currently persists. I will try removing the cmos battery for
a
few minutes to see if that does anything. But I fear the worst - could
it
be a coincidence and the mobo has actually failed?

I hope you remembered to disconnect from the mains supply whilst
reseting the cmos. The date/time remaining untouched by this operation
seems to be a pretty common outcome now with 'modern' bioses.

Sometimes a setting (often a hidden default) can be corrupted in such a
way as to fail to create a bad checksum. This is very rare, but not
unknown. In this situation, using the cmos setup program to reset to
defaults may not effect such hidden settings but a hard reset (mains
switched off and the reset jumper fitted for a second or two to clear
the cmos) should fix such problems.
