Re: Install Vista from SATA DVD drive?

Jeff,

I appreciate you taking the time to respond. Really.

However, I don't think your reply addresses my question. If all I have is a
SATA DVD drive (and all the other bits that make up my new build, obviously)
Vista surely isn't going to get a chance to start installing if the DVD
drive cannot boot (because it is SATA and needs drivers!).

So, either the mobo (Giga-byte GA-P35C-DS3R) will be able to recognise and
use the sata DVD drive straight off so I can boot the Vista install dvd or
else I'll have to install an ATA DVD drive to install Vista. Or at least,
that's what I'm wondering and hence my original post. I'm still hoping for
clarification on this.

Secondly, and this is perhaps a more general point in response to your
comment "I hope you like Vista, you will be in a minority if you do :-)".
Why oh why does everyone (-2 marks for exaggeration!) take any opportunity
to have a pop at Vista, especially when the question of Vista good or bad
was not part of my OP? Why do you think you know better than me what's good
for me, other than that I may have asked a fairly basic question in this
newsgroup?

God knows there's already far too much OT invective about Vista vs. XP or
Ubuntu etc, and I don't want to add to it, so here are my reasons why I have
decided on Vista, just so you know. Please don't waste your time telling me
I'm wrong - if I am I am confident I will be happy living with my mistake.
So, reasons, which are personal to me are:

1) I already have Vista on my laptop and know what I'm getting into. It's
no revolution vs. XP but it's fine for my purposes.
2) My new machine is (hopefully) going to be a hotshot speedster, so I can
live with a degree of performance hit versus XP.
3) I need to post screenshots of my application for my website, the product
documentation and help files etc.. Whether you or I like it, eventually
much of the Windows world will be on Vista and XP screenshots will look out
of date. Using Vista for my screenshots gives them the best bet for
longevity. As well as making them look more modern today.

I don't mean to specifically offend you here Jeff and I appreciate that you
took the time to respond! It's just that I've seen a fair few OT comments
like that in newsgroups and forums and I'm taking it all out on you. Most
unfair - I'm sorry! And of course, I've been hypocritical by adding to the
invective!

So back to my original question, in a nutshell, can I install Vista if the
only DVD drive I have in my rig is a SATA one?

Thanks!

Pete

Hi,

I've just ordered all the bits and pieces for my new build and am struck
by
the sudden fear that the mobo won't be able to use the SATA drive without
SATA drivers, so how will I install Vista from the DVD?

Or are drivers only required for SATA hard discs?

I suppose if the worst comes to the worst I will have to use an ATA drive
for the install? Is that the best/only option?

Vista recognises most SATA drives out of the box (so does XP SP2) so
unless you have an odd controller you should be fine.

I hope you like Vista, you will be in a minority if you do :-)
