Does this laptop have USB ports?
Yes, but for other reasons I don't want to use them. I simplified
slightly when I said it's a 'notepad'; it's actually a custom embedded
PC board I'm doing some development on. I have seen it working with a
Y adapter and PS/2 mouse and keyboard - it may be that there's some
differences in Y adapters, as mentioned here, for instance:

Not sure - my IBM Thinkpad one worked on a Toshiba, for instance.
Unfortunately doesn't prove anything.
Anyway: is there any particular reason why you can't spend six pounds
or so on a keyboard+mouse set with PS2 connectors? That may be your
simplest solution.
