I defrags my HDD's and re-started.CHKDSK found an error in your filing system and repaired it. :
Upon start-up it indicated HDD's needed checking and started
CHKDSK and found attribute problems in (128,"" "") whatever
that means It then went to listing a bunch of orphan files.
After this it re-started and it seems fine but - what's going
on? I thought the defag was reliable
The CHKDSK has never presented itself before and showed no bad
sectors after it had finished.
Job done. I've just had similar happen with one of the
partitions on my external HDD today. No worries. From time to
time the NTFS file system on your HDD gets errors for any
number of reasons. Usually XP sees these and puts them right
again.
ever happen on a system that's working correctly. You do get them
relatively frequently on external drives because of the
unreliability of the connection, but for an internal drive
they're often a sign of a failing HD. Backup, check SMART for
reallocated sectors and run the manufacturer's diagnostic.
Other possible causes include dodgy cables, faulty HD controller
or driver, failing PSU, power blips or (very rarely) general
systemic issues like chipset, memory or CPU faults.
Defragging is a high-stress operation and is therefore likely to
provoke a failure in a faulty drive.
run Spinrite. If your RAID array survives intact then it'll be
error-free and all will be well.
I've had file system corruption, detected and repaired by CHKDSK,
on an internal drive which has lasted another 3 years without ever
being repaired by CHKDSK again. It only died after 3 because I
removed it from the comp and was running it from an external power
supply which overvolted and fried it.
Harware profile won't work, numerous shortcuts on start menu are
corrupt etc. Not happy!
In view of the above; backup everything and change both disks,
format, and reinstall on the new disks. - Bin the old ones after
vandalising them. You have a dodgy array and it's best to renew.
Both less than 1 year old Samsung's.
Defrag caused it - no trouble whatsoever until then!
It could always be the controller that's faulty of course. (?) I've never
IMO heard of defrag causing a RAID array to go tits up.
