I suspect either the MOBO or the PSU is going tits up, any clues as to

I've seen similar behaviour on a number of systems and almost
always it was resolved by PSU replacement (probably 'tired'
electrolytic caps in them.)
I've seen similar behaviour caused by bad caps on motherboards as well. Of course, if it's bad motherboard caps you can just visually examine the board.
