I recently reinstalled windows after an HDD crash. After reinstalling
most stuff I neglected to install the AMD specific driver for the AMD
4200+ X2 Dual Core CPU I have.
There are two drivers AMD provide: the "Dual-Core Optimizer" which appears
to be a misleading name as it just fixes problems in software using RDTSC
for timing, and the "Dual Core Processor Driver" which is a prerequisite for
Cool'n'Quiet operation.
I'm running some pretty CPU intensive apps at the moment and I would
like to max out the CPU usage within the limits of the WIN XP 32Bit
environment.
FWIW, I have found that using the AMD driver and enabling Cool'n'Quiet on my
own Athlon 64 X2 reduces performance by a few percent if running one
single-threaded task with no CPU affinity. (I also have a good idea why this
is the case.)
Any 3rd party AMD X2 Dual Core drivers you would recommend? (if such
things actually exist)
I'd be interested to know if there are any for Windows.
Alex
