I've used Diskeeper to automatically defrag the hard disc on the
previous XP Pro machine that I built. Do I need to install it on the
Vista Home Premium machine I've just put together, or does Vista offer
something equivalent?

Unless you're using Diskeeper 2007, you'll need to upgrade. Auslogic do
a freeware disc defragmenter.
