These hardly matter, as they're cheap and easy to replace if you don't
like them.
Although they are easy to replace, I strongly disagree with "hardly
matter" for keyboard and mouse. When using your computer, most of the
time, you will be:
1- Looking at the screen
2- Either using the mouse or the keyboard
I agree entirely ... I certainly didn't mean to imply that the choice of
keyboard and mouse is an unimportant one -- just that it's cheap and easy
to replace those components if you don't like the ones you've chosen so
it doesn't matter greatly if one doesn't pick the right kit from the word
'go'. Indeed, it may be worth using a keyboard and mouse for a couple of
weeks to decide whether you do like it or not, and changing it (swapping
it with a friend, maybe) if you don't.
They're very personal choices -- some people like very soft, light of
touch, keyboards while other people prefer something "clickier". It's
very difficult to give meaningful advice to a complete stranger -- much
better let him try a few out and choose for himself.
I actually use the keyboard from an old Dan system (133MHz Pentium
vintage -- about 1999?). It's a little "clicky" for my taste, but has
quite a light touch and almost never miskeys (that is: I know that if I
pressed the button I got one, and only one, character entered) ... and
it's got my name (well, "dan") printed on it!
I use a Microsoft wired, ball, wheel mouse, I agree that Microsoft do
make good mouses (the basic ones, at least -- I'm not convinced by the
999-button varieties). I may go to an optical mouse one day but I
wouldn't give up the wire (and rely on batteries that I'd forget to
recharge/replace). This is another personal choice, though: my sister is
left-handed and her partner is not so their mouse is always being moved
from one side of the desk to the other -- a wireless mouse is ideal for
them.
