One problem is that sudden death is a relatively uncommon HD failure mode,
and the desktop RAID controllers don't seem to deal well with (or even
detect) dying drives.


It did on mine. The Matrix RAID system tray thing warned me that one of the
drives was not healthy, so it was RMA'd. It seems to do act like SMART
software.
