That matches my experience of the three RAID-1 failures I've had to recover. One problem is that sudden death is a relatively uncommon HD failure mode, and the desktop RAID controllers don't seem to deal well with (or even detect) dying drives.

RAID-1 isn't entirely useless but it's not an automatic win over using a separate backup drive.
