Thanks all for the responses - opinion seems to be quite widely split,
doesn't it?
Redundancy is more important to me than speed, so I am now pondering
RAID 1 as the better option. It's a pity that people's experiences of
it here seem that it's not that reliable. I keep backups, but I don't
want to spend a huge chunk of time reinstalling Windows and all my
software then restoring my data from backup when I could just switch to
using the other working drive.
Perhaps I ought to look into taking an image of the drive every few
nights or something like that.
Just look at a Windows Home Server system, as/when they are available or affordable. They have been engineered to do what you want (supposedly).
RAID1 will help, sometimes, if the failure happens to be a HDD. I just wouldn't bother, since a cross-network backup (which you can run daily, or hourly, or whatever you like) will protect you against a lot more. Ok, you still need a backup in case the house burns down ..
