Which does of course introduce plenty of difficulties - what kind of

from?
Everyone knows someone who can fix Windows, how many people know
someone
who
can fix a Linux installation?
For games I'd recommend dual booting. Not a problem with modern disc
sizes but not practical if you're running a server or P2P. Would you try
to run a modern game at the same time as a server or P2P on Windows
anyway though?
Actually yes I do leave Azuereus (sp) running while I`m playing games - a
dual core processor and lots of RAM will let you do that. Plus dual
booting
involves wasted time swapping between OS`s - why not just stick with a
single OS that does everything you want it to do?
Because there isn't a single OS that does everything I want. If I tried
to use Windows for everything it would waste more time than dual
booting.
Obviously if you have unusual requirements then you need an unusual OS to
meet them.
If you can read a newsgroup you can get all the support for Linux you
need. In the unlikely event your installation is too broken to get
online use a Live CD.
Which is still a lot more agravation that not bothering with Linux at
all.
If my PC`s broken and I want help fixing it, I don`t want to be waiting
hours for a reply online - I want to be able to ring someone up and get
the
answer there and then. With Windows, because it is more popular, there
are
enough people out there that many people can give one a call and ge their
machine fixed right away. Linux - post a question, wait a while, the
first
5 replies you get have nothing to do with the problem and then you
realise
that you need to give more information about a particular program you
run,
next thing you know you`ve been without a properly working PC for a
couple
of days (when you have to do the above around working). Thanks but no
thanks.
There are a couple of people who I do support for now and again. Usually
when they phone up with a problem I have to go round there to sort it
out - even if I've got a good idea what's wrong over the phone it's
often too difficult to explain the fix to them.
That`s down to the skill levels on both ends of the phone, unless it`s a
hardware fault, or the system is seriously knackered it`s quicker and easier
to do it over the phone than go round and fix the problem.
