VIA or Promise Sata controllers

Just bought myself a new SATA drive.
My motherboard ASUS A8v Deluxe has a VIA K8T800 Pro South Bridge controller
and a Promise 20378 RAID controller.
I don't plan on setting up any RAID arrangements. All I want to do is make
the new SATA drive the boot drive and use my 2 (current) IDE drives as
slaves.
Do any of the controllers offer a benefit over the other?
I've tried googling but got nothing specific.
Cheers
Steven.
