Dual channel memory question

Would 3GB of memory work in dual-channel mode? From what I've read in several motherboard manuals, to use all four memory slots requires all the memory to be the same for dual-channel, but is it possible to use 2x1GB in one channel and 2x512MB in the other?

Anyone tried/used this combination?

Thanks in advance
