If you can get into the BIOS setup program, see if there is an option to reset the ESCD (Extended System Configuration Data) - if this gets corrupted weird boot things can happen.
I'll try that when I'm next in front of the machine. Will taking out the battery achieve the same result?

Not if the data is stored in flash - taking out the battery ain't the fix it used to be, but there may be a jumper setting on the motherboard to clear the NVRAM/Flash.
Thanks - next time I'm in front of the machine I'll track down the motherboard documentation.
