Try an LM386 analogue op-amp based chip. : It requires only a handful of
discrete components to make a very nice amplifier; the most expensive of
those being, IIRC, a 2200uF capacitor in series with the output.
There's RS Components which instantly springs to mind, and browsing Google
reveals this lot too. :

If you want a stereo amp using the LM386 just use 2 ICs with a common
ground. and dual positive rails. : The max gain is as much as 1000 IIRC; but
of course distortion sets in at that level, even though the chip uses a
negative feedback loop.
