I have a machine which, about half the time, won't complete PowerOnSelfTest (POST, for anyone even less clued-up on hardware than I am!). This machine starts to show BIOS messages, but all-too-often quickly ends up with a blank screen with a flashing cursor top-left. What's that all about?

If you can get into the BIOS setup program, see if there is an option to reset the ESCD (Extended System Configuration Data) - if this gets corrupted weird boot things can happen.

I'll try that when I'm next in front of the machine. Will taking out the battery achieve the same result?
