Apart from my new Power Supply Tester, and a voltmeter to help me
confirm what it's telling me, what physical test equipment is
worth buying. I'm often asked to figure out what's wrong with a
customer's machine (although I'm really a software type). I test
the voltage on the PSU, run Memtest86, and see if I can boot from
CD. Interested in raising my game...
I've never needed anything more. Never even needed a PSU tester, I
just count them as disposable items. There's precious little in a
PC that will only die partially, and nothing where actual
item-specific testing kit wouldn't cost 100-1000x the price of a
replacement component.

Snips and a soldering iron if you're going to get into replacing
bad caps, I suppose.
Hadn't really thought about that - do I just look for swelling?

Fnarr! Yes, swollen ends and any leakage. (Sorry, watching Little
Britain In Oz in the background...)

Symptoms much like dodgy power or dodgy cooling.

Cheers - Jaimie

I'll have a look. I've already swapped out the PSU and installed a
PCI-slot fan.

I'm watching the Bob Marley Rainbow concert on BBC4. (Untypical: I'm
more into opera, actually. And Rickie Lee Jones, of course).

You were missing Big Brother! Charlie got evicted at last.
