Thanks Stevie, Jon.. Same happens with a powered hub and no other USB

First thing you need to do is find out whether this is a hardware or
software problem. A clean test install on a spare HD is usually the best
way.
An even better way is to try booting a Linux 'Live CD' such as knoppix
or Ubuntu (or one of the other hundred or so alternatives you could
choose from:-). No need to swap out hard drives or even worry about
contaminating an existing install.
Although the 'Live CD' might not enable the sound chip and offer a
reduced number of video modes, pretty well everything else (network
adapters, usb devices and firewire devices, not to mention keyboard and
mouse) should work ok unless there _is_ an underlying hardware problem.
Knoppix has been known to enable _everything_ in a surprisingly large
number of cases (FSVO 'large' :-).
A 'Live CD' can be a handy 'life saver', especially if you've already
tried one or two _before_ the system went 'funny' on you so you have a
'benchmark' to compare the 'funny' state to (i.e. be able to recognise
anything being _more_ unusual when testing with the Linux cd.
