A Packard Bell will not complete boot up sequence.
At switch on a Packard Bell splash screen appears for no more than 3
seconds, followed by a text screen indicating 'we apologise for the
inconvenience but Windows did not start successfully... offering safe
start, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last
known good config, start windows normally.
Selecting start windows normally or last known good config, produces a
momentary Windows XP splash screen, a short pause and then back to the
PB splash screen.
Selecting safe mode or safe mode with command prompt, produces a list
of Windows\System32\drivers, a short pause and then back to the PB
splash screen.
Grateful for any suggestions as to a possible cause.
Many thanks for your responses - chkdsk reported an error but it seems
to have resolved it.
Which just demonstrates that 'NTFS is bulletproof' turns out to be a
slight exaggeration. No surprises there.
It is *very very very* common for a windows xp system to go through a bsod
boot cycle because a dirty hard drive, in the majority of cases this also
prevents safe mode booting.
Access to the chkdsk command from the (f8) safe mode menu would have saved a
lot of users a lot of headaches, a lot of cash and a lot of lost files.
I know it is possible to access chkdsk from the recovery console, but this
is way beyond the average user without a specific list of instructions.
