Oh I do love Packard Bell. :
I'm working on an old Packerd Bell box that has been renovated
previously by
persons unknown, running a 1 gig Celeron. I've tried every way
possible to install XP on it but it just refuses to install; and the
only other o/s I have is Win 95 - which XP refuses to upgrade.
What happens is XP copies all the files to the HD and reboots the
computer. Whether or not I press esc at the Compaq screen to
initiate POST, the machine says
Er, Packard Bell or Compaq? I'm only hazarding a guess, but is it a
Packard Bell case with a Compaq MoBo fitted?
BTW, bad memory can cause similar symptoms so I suggest you run
memtest86 just to eliminate this possibility. Also, you can suffer
similar silliness with very old bios versions which might be curable
by a flash update (if a suitable one is available, that is!).
I remember looking it up before the disk failure. (I've now got it working
perfectly again and have restored all files from backup.)
Simply deleting all existing partitions, including a primary dos partition
that somehow got on there (???) and creating a single partition using XP
setup...seemed to do the trick. Many thanks for the assistance to all. :)
