There is an ebay auction for a case I want, and it comes with a MSI MS-
6545, a 2ghz P4 and 512meg of Rambus memory. I think I might stand a
fair chance of getting it.
Anyone know from experience what the fastest P4 CPU that will go in that
board is, websites just say "upto 2ghz and above".
Currently I have a Duron 1.3 with a Geforce MX2 so that processor would
be a major leap as it is.
With Rambus being so expensive, and AGP graphics cards being out of date
and limited now, do you reckon it would be worth maxing out the P4 and
memory with the best AGP card I can find (still a big upgrade and the
board is already there with the auction), or strip it out bay it for
what I can get and get a more modern AMD/Intel Dual core setup with DDR
ram and PCI-e slot?
What do you intend to use it for?
Chris
PC at home.
Some light gaming (that I already do), mainly web and forums/newsgroups,
some light photoshopping.
Then even with the 2GHz P4 it will be more than adequate.
Although the graphics slot is AGP 4x, you can still use AGP 8X cards in it.
(At 4x speeds of course!) There are still plenty available new, and lots on
eBay. For example, an FX5200 is just a touch over 20 quid from ebuyer. This
card will run the full graphics features of Vista so would meet your needs
easily.
If some more memory comes up on eBay at a bearable price in the future, that
would help with any graphics manipulation you want to do.
I'm just thinking it must be better than what I have now, and as it is
with the case which I am more interested in than the motherboard (decent
small server cube) then it might be worth using in the mean time.
I would go for it!
Chris
