So overclocking is great if you don't stress the machine that much or expect
it to stay stable @ the highly overclocked speeds for 5 years. Not for
everyone I know.
Overclocking may be easy enough, but inevitably you reduce the safety
margin. That means less margin in e.g. hot weather situations or for
extended calculations. In most practical cases you wont notice the small
speed improvement.
Well for gaming you should see an increase in framerates with a good card if you overclocked the CPU. So for gamers there is a difference to be had by overclocking whether you actually need the extra fps is another thing entirely. I agree though for general uses there is not much real point in overclocking just to say my CPU cost ££ and it runs at xx the same speed as a chip that costs £££.
I can overclock my Northwood 2.8 by changing the bus speed 200->214MHz,
(3GHz) the memory follows suit. However if I go to 215MHz, then the
memory jums back from 400 to 350MHz. AT the moment I am actually
underclocking it at 2.5GHz, this allows me to run extended numerical
computations in hot weather. The cooler is a 3 year old Zalman Duct
fan; not up to modern heatpipe technology. Just for fun, I tried to
underclock it to 1.4GHz, most desktop things ran as as usual, the
digital TV card no problem, wordprocessing was fine.
I`m not sure how good those northwood 2.8s are for overclocking not every type of CPU/Mobo/RAM Setup is good for overclocking but the Core 2 Duo's are supposed to be real good, particular the early e4300 and e6600 and the newish e6320, e6420 and e2140, e2160 CPUs... although not everybody is getting the same results.
