How to determine if a power supply is sufficient for the load.
Numbers on supply and estimates from power calculators are
insufficient. Only solution requires a 3.5 digit multimeter. If
system powers up, then access (multitask) every peripheral
simultaneously. Read hard drive while playing a DVD movie, while
accessing the network. Then measure voltages on one of each wire -
orange, red, yellow, and purple. Those numbers must exceed 3.23,
4.87, and 11.7. If not, power supply is undersized (even if computer
is working) and may cause intermittent failures months or years
later. If yes, then power supply is sufficient for the load today and
in the future.

If a borrowed supply was going to create damage, then it did so when
you first applies power - in milliseconds. Once power was on, then
better would have been to measure voltages on wires from power supply
to motherboard.

It is good procedure to use that meter to find a defective power
supply. Then use the meter again to confirm new supply outputs
sufficient voltage when under a maximum load condition.

You had an orange spark inside the supply. Therefore an internal
part is defective. Which one would have told us more? But it is
warrantied meaning if you open it, then its warranty may be
compromised.


Thanks for all the info w_tom, I do indeed have a 3.5 multimeter I did
check this before, the other thing I would say is that the same kit
ran on a much lesser powersupply for years which could supply much
less power, I replaced that with the new (now dead) more powerful
paxpower because I was concerned that after adding components that the
original one was underpowered. I will however check again when the new
on arrives. I assume that is the best course of action
