UPS and power strip protectors use the same spike protection
components and circuits. If a power strip could not eliminate that
hardware destructive event, then a computer grade UPS will not
either. UPS connects computer directly to AC mains when not in
battery backup mode. IOW computer connects to mains exactly like when
on power strip. Difference occurs when power drops so low that
incandescent bulb dim to less than 40% intensity. Then a UPS switches
to battery and provides some of the 'dirtiest' electricity to the
computer.
When in battery backup mode, do not connect a power strip protector
to that UPS's output. UPS power in battery backup mode is so 'dirty'
as to maybe even damage a power strip. But since computers are so
robust, that 'dirty' electricity is not harmful.
UPS is to maintain power during blackout and extreme brownouts - to
protect from data loss. Other electrical events such as harmonics,
surges, and noise are not solved by a computer grade UPS. Those
problems are suppose to be solved in computer's power supply or
eliminated before those problems can enter the building.
UPS would not eliminate reasons for your power supply failure. But
major reasons for such failures are power supplies that are missing
essential functions; bought using only watts and quid as the
criteria. Many clone supplies are missing such functions which are
why failure rates among those models are so frequent.
The fuse blew? Then a failure is probably inside power supply's
front end - often easily fixed. But one does not fix power supplies
to save money. Supplies are fixed to learn why that failure
happened. In your case, a most likely reason for failure is a
defective internal component, or a person who selected that power
supply.
