By the way, a stock 8800GTS is typically ~80% faster than a stock

The trouble is the 8800 will probably work out over 80% more expensive
by the time I've thrown away the workings of a scrote's moped that'll be
attached to it and replaced it with something from Zalman or similar -
and probably had to upgrade my PSU as well after all.
I've always bought mid-range graphics cards rather than the greatest,
and been satisfied. OTOH I always used to have a 1024x768 monitor, and
it's probably the 1680x1050 widescreen I got last year that's been most
responsible for it starting to feel too slow! Several games support that
resolution, but fewer offer lower wide-screen resolutions, especially
16:10. Looking at benchmarks, higher resolutions do seem to exaggerate
the difference between a 256MB 8600GTS and a 320MB 8800GTS, but even the
8600GTS is a big step up from my current 6600GT, and that's what really
matters.
On the plus side, you can get 2GB of decent DDR2 for less than 50 quid
atm. It's hard to worry too much about obsolesence at those prices.
That's a lot better than I thought. Crucial still the best place to buy?
