I'm a bit out of the loop in hardware because this AMD64 3000+ and
GeForce 6600GT on an Asus A8N-SLI have served me quite well for almost 2
years, but I could definitely do with some more oomph in the graphics

An 8600GTS looks like the best card to go for if I want to future proof
for DX10 at a reasonable price with silent cooling. But I read a review
of an 8800GTS (not much faster?)

Is that a guess or have you read the reviews of the 8600GTS... in the reviews I read the 8800 GTS is that much faster and you'd be better off saving another £ 43 to get the 320mb of one of those.
