Hi all. What about drivers for the mobo chipset (presumably came with the bundle).
I've just got back from visiting my father in law. He has a PC he
uses for internet, music storeage and home digital pics. This PC was
home built by myself a few months ago at his request.
To keep the price down and to try and improve reliability (HA!) we
bought a mobo / memory / CPU pre installed bundle.
Specs? AMD 3200 32bit, 1 gig memory, midrange (7700?) GPU, 2 HDD's
and 2 OD's.
Everest Home shows the mobo and chipset as unknown. It has an Award
BIOS though. At the moment I don't have access to the complete
report.
It's running XP Pro, SP2 and full updates. And he has installed a
Norton product for fire walling.
So, what's the problem with the USB? It won't recognise some toys,
but will others. He has a new Zen M 30gig mp3 player. The software
installs. The player lights up OK. It accepts a change through the
USB cable, and is fully charged. In 'My Computer' it shows as a
removable device. But the Zen and the PC won't communicate. However,
it works on his son's PC.
He has two digital cameras. Same thing. AND, one of the camera's (a
FujiPix) seems to blow a fuse when plugged in to the USB port. It
needs the battery removed and the camera left for a while before it
will respond after being plugged in.
USB mouse works OK, as does a hub. No errors in the device manager.
I assumed it was a USB controller chip problem. So we spent forty
quid on a Belkin USB card and a hub. Card in, drivers in, restart...
all OK in device manager. Try the camera... it dies. Huh? Try the
Zen, as before it's not recognised.
Swear.
I suggested replacing the Mobo and he may let me do this. But, anyone
got any other ideas as to what might be wrong?
The camera has worked fine for about three years on his old PC, so
it's not at fault, I'm sure. The Zen has a reputation for a fault,
but it worked on his son's PC. I have them both home here now and
tomorrow, if I can find time, I'll install them on my PC.
Thanks for reading this essay on failure.
Night night.
Have you used MS Windows system information to identify chipset (or device manager)
.
