The message <46309f44$0$8739$ed2619ec@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
from "JoeJoe" <no@xxxxxxxx> contains these words:
I am using the latest Medion MD8822 PC. Motherboard is a MSI - MS-7318,
and
I am running XP Home.
I am now on the second v92 modem - tried my old one that is definitely
working, and now a new one (http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/102866).
Both
were tried with the one available PCI slot on the MB, however neither
were
recognised by XP, either automatically, or using the Add Hardware
option.
Any idea what to do next?
Any help will be much appreciated.
Go to the Add Hardware wizard, click next, when XP can't detect a new
device you'll be presented with a list of devices already installed on
the computer.
Select add a new device and click next.
Then select 'Install the hardware that I manually select from a list
(Advanced), click next.
Choose modem from list of device types, hit next.
Then the install new modem dialogue will appear, check 'don't detect my
modem, I will select it from a list' and hit next.
On the next screen that appears click the 'Have Disk' button, put the
cd/floppy disk with the drivers in a drive and browse to the drivers on
the disk.
Select the correct drivers and hit the next button.
Then, in theory, Robert is your aunties husband if you're lucky.

If this fails and knowing PCI modems its likely check in the hardware
manager for unknown devices if there is one delete it and then run through
Dereks instructions again .

Thanks Derek, but there are no unknown devices in the device manager.
I really think that it is a problem with the MB.
