USB is ***. Drop outs and poor reception are the norm.

Would a PCI device be any better to use?

This is for an older laptop, right? I mean, anyone using WiFi on a
mains bound desktop PC is just asking for trouble (piss poor data rates
and a security nightmare).

If you're considering DX WiFi, a good USB dongle beats a PCI card hands
down since you can extend the usb to some 20 odd metres without
incurring any loss at RF when placing it at the focus of a 'Wok Antenna'
remote from the PC. Trying this trick with a PCI card via some twenty
metres of co-ax would more or less cancel out the gain of the dish
(although the better antenna location would still provide a benefit).

I'd agree that, in general (and in common with firewire), USB is still
a toy interface with absolutely no pedigree whatsoever, never to be
entrusted with 'mission critical' devices (such as keyboards,
networking, and external backup drives, and so on). However, it can
sometimes be useful, such as in the case of the DX WiFi example quoted
above.
