Re: Gigabyte 965P DS3P or DS4 or DQ6

I can't see much difference between the DS3P and the DS4 apart from
the heat pipes. I also can't explain the price premium for the DQ6.

OK - that makes two of us :)

They all get good reviews. One thing to watch out for is that most of
these boards come in more than one revision. If you want to run a
quad core processor or use a 1333FSB then get the latest version.

Thanks - that's reassuring. I did notice the range of revisions too :)

However I would go for a AMD AM2 board with an EE CPU for a NAS box.
IMHO you don't need the extra performance from an Intel CPU.

You are quite right of course, the NAS box by itself doesn't need such guts
The three bits of extra info I didn't previously mention that sway me to
these boards are:

1 - I like Intel chipsets, seldom get problems with linux on an Intel
northbridge/southbridge combo.

2 - I do like AMD CPUs, but apart from the Opteron, I hate the chipset
support. I won't touch NForce purely on the grounds I don't want to be
dependant on binary drivers (I must admit I have not checked on the latest
reverse engineered drivers like forcedeth, but Intel release specs, so the
drivers are fully featured and solid, whereas a reversed driver is not
likely to be as good IMO). I had reasonable success with VIA chipsets and
AMD in the past, but I still don't rate VIA as much as Intel.

3 - The "NAS box" bit was perhaps a bit misleading - I *might*[1] run XEN on
it so I can migrate other server processed (apache, exim etc) around if I
need to work on my other server, which itself might also get upgraded to
the same mobo as the NAS box just so I have access to a mobo with lots of
SATA in case the NAS box blows up. So some spare oomph won't go amiss.

[1] subject to research....

Anyway, thanks for the input - I'm coming to the conclusion that the DS4
looks as good as any and is a good 20 quid cheaper than the DQ6.

Cheers

Tim
