I had trouble with Linux and Vista, in that Windows would not boot at all after installing Linux (Grub boot loader) and I put that down to the new boot loader in Vista not being understood by Grub, but then it was a beta copy of Vista.

I believe someone else on this ng got Vista working with Grub so YMMV.

I think my strategy is going to be to get an OEM version of Vista and if that
really doesn't work, I will just have to get an OEM version of XP as well. I was
hoping that the bottom would fall out of the marekt for XP and I could get a
cheap copy but that has not happened yet - Says it all really!

I don't know if its still true or not (as I don't read every EULA from MS) but there used to be thing called a downgrade license so you'd only need buy the latest version, if you didn't like it then you can "borrow" a freind's CD and install the previous version. Things may have changed since the days of online activation though so check the EULA.
