Heat it in the gas flame of your cooker
If it's not a plated tip, file/scrape it to bare copper and tin it
immediately. I used to do some soldering on boards that could be up to £20k
each, so not a lot of room for error. Tinning is important to get the joint
up to temperature as soon as possible - if it takes too long a lot of heat
can travel to the component.
