Dave, I'd have preferred you to reply to the group instead of sending me
email. Google for the "freezer trick". If you place the drive in an
airtight bag and put it in the freezer for an hour or so then
immediately connect it to a PC, it may work for long enough for you to
get your data off. You'll need a second drive to copy data to. I have
successfully done this, but it only works in a limited, specific set of
circumstances.

You do this entirely at your own risk, etc. and be warned it may make
matters worse. If any of the data is important, you'd best consign it
to the tender care of a data recovery service.
