The batch programs are very simple xcopy commands and so far have performed
well

Any chance you could post the batch file commands here, or make them
available on the www somewhere?

I'm currently using Second Copy 7 for network backup, but I'd like to
experiment with batch files too.

Second Copy is, IME, easier, safer, and has more facilities (for keeping archive copies, synchronising, etc. etc.).
