write errors copying to external usb ide drive

When copying large amounts of data to external usb ide drive, many write delay errors and warnings of corrupt files on disk - win XP SP2 blames network or hardware for write delay errors. The copied data appears OK, but checkdisk finds orphaned files etc - quite a mess. I've tried two separate drives in the enclosure- same problem. Sounds like faulty external usb enclosure?
