It's been a while since I've done any research on cpu's mainly because I've not been in the market but I'm now finally thinking of upgrading my PC from the meagre 823Mhz Pentium (slight clocking) I have (surprisingly works very well).

I've had a look at the Duo cores from Intel, the E4300, E6300 and E6600 all of which differ in some form. Are these much better than Intel's 3Ghz HT cpu's? Will a 1.8Ghz Duo outperform a P4 3Ghz?

I can't afford the top of the range CPU and looking at the E6600 as top budget but a 3Ghz CPU is measly money in comparison.

As for overclocking what CPU would be the best to save me a fair sum of money on the next model up taking into account any additional cooling and ram type required. Moving onto any of these mentioned should I suspect easily provide a leap in perfomance from what I have.

Also motherboard recommendation would be a great help.

Intel's Core 2 Duo is certainly the way to go, at present.
There are new CPUs forthcoming

and the E4300 which is good for overclocking

is around 160 USD, at present, and will drop to 113 USD in 2H07

You need a new system (DDR2 RAM, mainboard, PSU with sufficient power at 12 V), so you may take into consideration buying a complete PC with Vista (Premium Home or Business) preinstalled.
