He might have been messing with BIOS settings. I'd suggest that you
either reset all to default and start over or have a browse around in
there and see if you can spot anything strange.
If that all looks OK then I'd pull the whole system to pieces and remake
all the connections. Dust and age can do strange things. You may have a
corroded connector somewhere.

That should keep you busy for a while..
